Feasibility studies are the preliminary investigations carried out at the very outset of a building project. The results of those investigations will shape the project entirely. Feasibility studies provide the answers to two key questions:
How much is it going to cost?
How can I make the most profit?
At the outset of a project, the client will be faced with a number of options. For example, they may be considering building a number of flats, or one large property. A quantity surveyor will help the client make the right decision and the most profit by undertaking a cost-benefit analysis.
The cost-benefit analysis
A cost-benefit analysis weighs the total expected costs of a project, versus the total expected return. As well as the financial costs, a quantity surveyor can take into account other concerns such as timings, or the risk involved in different types of projects. The cost-benefit analysis will allow clients to make the right decision for their own particular needs.
Cost planning
Once the type of building has been agreed, the quantity surveyor will provide detailed costs for each individual stage of the project. This will enable the client to establish whether they have the necessary funds and cash flow to proceed. Cost plans are also used during the tendering process, when obtaining estimates from contractors.
Design and construction
During the design process, the quantity surveyor will provide advice on the most cost-effective layout and construction techniques, working with the designers to produce plans that stay within budget and maximize profit.
