A quantity surveyor will monitor costs throughout the entire building project, reporting on changes and managing payments. Often, due to their comprehensive knowledge of the industry, they will act as Project Manager. They will manage the tendering and procurement process and liase with contractors.

The quantity surveyor will plan the construction process to ensure that a logical and realistic schedule is in place. This will ensure that the project proceeds successfully and smoothly, and, most importantly, on time and within budget.
Monitoring costs
The quantity surveyor will monitor all costs to ensure that the works are being carried out correctly and in accordance with the contract. They will manage and negotiate variations in cost to ensure that there are no future disputes.
Financial reporting and managing payments
The quantity surveyor will provide regular financial reports to the client, detailing the work carried out and any changes. The financial reports will also estimate the likely final account. The client will be advised when payments should be made. When work is complete, the quantity surveyor will provide a financial summary and prepare a final account. When acting as the Project Manager, they will also prepare progress reports on all aspects of the project.
